Article considers how to translate into Latvian the proper name of Ἀπόστολος Παῦλος in New Testament, either Pāvils or Pauls. The first case is chosen by tradition, but author argues that the second choice is more in correspondence with how Greek word Παῦλος would be rendered into Latvian.

Daugavpils (Latvia) and Narva (Estonia) are cities in the Baltic States and signifi cant cultural and economic centres of their respective countries. These cities are characterized by a minority of nationals (19.8% of residents of Daugavpils are Latvian, 4% of residents of Narva are Estonian) and a similar linguistic situation: there is a dominance of Russian in the press, television and radio, but the state language prevails in the urban language signs.The aim of the study is to analyse the linguistic and extralinguistic means used for the creation of ergonyms of educational and cultural spheres. The paper deals with the state of research on literary/stylistic onomastics as an auxiliary science of stylistics. The typology of styles allows the inclusion of research on stylistic nomenclature within the research on text style, an author’s individual style, as well as type styles. On flora semantics in house names found in Vidzeme: materials contained in the 1826 counting of souls in Vidzeme province The information of the counting of souls containing both house names and names of individuals is an essential aspect of historical onomastics. The first counting of souls in Vidzeme took place in 1782 and coincided with the 4 th analogous census of the provinces of Russia. This article focuses on the place that proper names originating from rock, or popular music in general, take or could take in dictionaries of proper names. It starts with an overview of onomástica published thus far, revealing a limited interest of Polish researchers in proper nouns related to this form of artistic activity. This discovery prompted the author to share his suggestions regarding such an onomasticon, or even onomástica, where names from popular music and specific categories would take a central place. „Memory turn” in the humanities allows to approach old problems from a new perspective. The author argues that the sphere of complicated Russian-Polish relations should be presented as a conflict between two distinct collective memories.
